To foster a deeper connection across projects related to community resilience the Town of Long Island Selectboard voted to establish a Community Resilience Team in April of 2025. Resilience can be defined as the ability to prepare for, endure, react to and move forward from challenges. Building resilience is one of the five values identified in the vision outlined by Long Island community members as part of the 2022 Comprehensive Plan. The team will work towards implementation of community resilience recommendations from the town’s Comprehensive Plan. Current priorities include groundwater supply sustainability, coastal erosion, improvements to working waterfront infrastructure, and wildfire risk mitigation. In parallel, work is underway with the Island Institute as a partner in the Maine Island Project to complete a community vulnerability study. The outcome will inform direction and help the town prepare for climate related risks to our natural resources, infrastructure and self-sustainable way of life.
